why dogs?
Dogs have an incredible sense of smell!Mine detection dogs (MDDs) are specially trained
‘sniff out’ the explosive odors present in landmines.
Unlike metal detectors, tools commonly used in demining, a dog is able to locate both
metal and plastic landmines.
A
MDD works in a team with a human handler. An MDD team can search up
to 30 times faster than a manual deminer without compromising accuracy.
Machines
are also used to clear landmines. While effective and efficient, machines
can be impractical because they
are costly and require frequent expensive maintenance. It costs approximately
$20,000 to purchase, train and deliver a MDD.
A
MDD typically works 6 - 8 years. Upon retirement, MLI requires recipient organizations to locate suitable homes for the
dogs in recognition of their service.
