MDD Susan’s Role in a Life-Saving Rescue

MLI Staff

In the Aghdam region of Azerbaijan, landmines are a constant threat. Dedicated mine detection dog (MDD) Susan works alongside his handler, Babayev Elnur to "sniff out" the dangerous landmines. Their job is not only important by uncovering the mines so that they can be disarmed, but it is also crucial to saving and impacting countless lives. Together, Susan and Babayev make a strong team and are invaluable members of the Mine Action Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (ANAMA)'s K9 Unit. Their work allows ANAMA to restore safe-mine-free land to displaced Azerbaijanis, allowing them to move into new homes and restart their lives.

Although the demining teams work to ensure safety, mine-impacted areas around the cleared land are still dangerous. One day, the team received word that a group of villagers living in a newly restored region had accidentally triggered a mine in a local graveyard, setting off an explosion. After the explosion, the team quickly got to work, searching for additional dangerous explosives hidden in the area. A coordinated effort began, with both the MDD team and the clearance unit rushing to the scene to help the injured as quickly as possible. Babayev and Susan were at the front, sniffing out landmines to create a path of safety for emergency personnel to safely assist those injured in the explosion.

As the team neared the graveyard, the danger became even more real. The ground was full of hidden explosives, any of which could go off at any moment. However, with her keen sense of smell, Susan moved forward with confidence. Babayev trusted his partner as they carefully made their way through the minefield. Susan's nose never stopped working, finding the scent of buried mines with incredible accuracy.

Even under pressure, MDD Susan's training and excellent temperament allowed her to stay calm and focused. Each step brought more danger, but Susan guided them through without hesitation. Susan and Babayev's teamwork was impeccable as they moved together in perfect sync.

When they reached an injured villager, Susan stopped and signaled the presence of another mine nearby. Her training kicked in, warning the group of the immediate threat. Babayev quickly marked the spot and called in the bomb disposal team to neutralize the danger. Thanks to Susan's skills and Babayev's quick thinking, they prevented more harm in an already dangerous situation.

Once the immediate threat was handled, Babayev and Susan allowed emergency services to move quickly to get the injured villager to safety. Susan’s actions not only kept the villagers from further harm but also helped with the critical evacuation. The villager was rushed to a medical facility where they received urgent care, all thanks to the quick work of the MDD team.

Susan’s bravery, paired with Babayev’s expertise, showed just how important mine detection dogs are in these hazardous environments. Their role goes beyond just detecting mines, they are key assets in rescue operations, ensuring the safety of civilians in conflict zones. The bond between Babayev and Susan showcased the power of the partnership between the handler and MDD which is built on trust, respect, and the shared goal of saving lives.

This mission was just one of many where Susan’s dedication and skill proved essential. Through their efforts, Susan and Babayev have helped clear dangerous paths and bring hope to those in need.
